5 Ways to Wake Up Grateful Everyday In light of the recent events that have happened in my life, the topic of gratitude has been on my mind recently. I'm extremely thankful and grateful for the many doors that were opened up to me during our hardships and the amount of love and support from family, friends, and even strangers. It's amazing what the human spirit is capable of during hard times. As all this was happening, I woke up each day feeling grateful instead of burdened and sad by everything. How did I do this and more importantly, how can you do this? I've listed my top five ways to wake up each day feeling grateful and how to lead a richer and fuller life.

  1. Start the Day With a Positive Attitude

Each day I wake up and immediately focus on something positive for the day. It could be as simple as looking at P, giving our cat kisses (more so because she demands them), or focusing on a positive event happening that day. It immediately makes me feel ready to tackle the day and not worry about the various stresses that could happen.

2. Take it Slow

Often times we rush around in the morning, scrambling to get everything together for the day that we neglect to take a moment for ourselves and partner. Do I wish I could sleep in past 6:30? Sure! But waking up earlier has given me the chance to wake up with P and take time making breakfast, tidying up the bed, and spending those precious moments talking and laughing before he heads to work. Those little moments make me grateful for our relationship and have the added benefit of keeping us close and strong plus it's another way to start the day positively.

3. Exercise 

I've recently gotten into the routine of exercising in the morning and it's been such a great help at waking up grateful each day. It makes me more aware and credible for my health, which is particularly important with flue season coming. Depending on your schedule, try and make time for a little exercise. This could be a quick run, some yoga, or even some mindful stretching to get your blood flowing. Exercise in the morning has been proven to help increase your muscular and cardiovascular system and improve your mood. So hop to it!

4. Remember the Bad

This may sound counter-intuitive but remembering the bad can help recenter you and make you grateful for the present and all the good things that have happened since. This creates an explicit contrast in your mind and can show a clear change from the past to the present. So don't be so quick to forget the bad events, if anything, embrace those moments and use them to show how far you've come.

5. Make a Vow to Practice Gratitude

Above all, to wake up grateful each day we must practice it. You won't suddenly wake up and feel instantly grateful tomorrow, it takes time. As you practice living each day in a grateful manner, you'll start waking up naturally feeling that way.

I encourage all of my readers to be grateful and to lead rich and fulfilling lives.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner, November is the obvious month to practice more gratitude and thankfulness each day. But I'm challenging all my readers to not just reserve it for this month. We should all try and practice gratitude each day so that we can wake up more positive and lead richer lives.
