How to Create the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe

How to Create the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe

It's not the first time I've mentioned on here my love for capsule wardrobes (check out past posts here and here).  They're an easy way to set out what you want to wear for a season and it makes you not only take a hard look at your wardrobe but also get creative with your clothes. I've been instituting a capsule wardrobe in my life for quite some time now and it's been a great way to use what I already have, donate what I don't need, and manage my clothing budget for each season. That's why I was so eager to partner with Cladwell's latest venture, Capsule, an easy app that makes creating a capsule wardrobe easy and stress-free.

Now I know the mere thought of cleaning out a closet is a harrowing idea for some (hello P and his massive pile of t-shirts) but I'm here to show you alongside Capsule that cleaning out your closet and creating a capsule wardrobe is easy and fun.

When I started the capsule process I was delighted to see the above message before we began. I think many people view cleaning out a closet and creating a capsule wardrobe as an extreme version of minimalism. Trust me, it's definitely not. Capsule strives to not only clean up your wardrobe but bring about a whole new level of self discovery and a way to reevaluate your lifestyle. For example, it's still ridiculously hot here in Charleston. Do you know what that means? I don't need to add in my sweaters, tights, or heavy coat to this season's capsule. But we'll get to that in a bit.

So take a deep breath and let's dive into cleaning out our closets!

Cleaning out my closet is one of my favorite things to do each year and I use a similar system to Capsule. If you're struggling to get through all the clothes you've accumulated over the years, this is an excellent four step guide to cleaning out your closet. We begin by looking at our closet and separating everything into two piles: gather and separate by things you love and wear all the time.

After evaluating your two piles, observe and note what themes and colors you see in the clothes that you love. Make a little list so you don't forget later on because they'll come in handy later in the process. Next, remove any seasonal items that you won't be wearing. Move those to the side.

I typically take an extra step here and try on clothes that I haven't worn in a while. If they don't fit right, look awful, or I'm not in love with them anymore, I immediately put them into a donate or sell pile. We have two really great consignment stores here that I frequently bring in gently used items. See - cleaning out your closet can even be profitable!

Celebrate and do a little dance because the hard part is over! Remember that little list I told you to write down of your favorite colors and styles to wear? Well now it's time to use that list! Capsule asks for your three main colors in three areas: neutrals, mains, and accents. For me, I love to wear blacks, grays, and nude colors and add in whites, blues, and heavier red and green colors. That's because those colors look best on me and bring out my natural beauty (hello!). This is a exercise to truly see what you're drawn to and what colors you like to wear the most.

Now dive back into your pile of clothes that you love and start setting aside your colors that fit your color palate. Next, place in the seasonal items you'll be wearing this season. For me, since it's round two of summer here again, I definitely won't be needing my heavy winter coat, tights, or heavy boots. I will however need a jacket, ankle boots, and can also keep using my light dresses and skirts, and my two favorite pairs of pants.

That's it. That's literally all I need to get through this season.

Now it'll be different for everyone else but try to not let your capsule wardrobe grow too much.

Hence step four, picking out how many items you need for your capsule wardrobe. You've got your pile of favorite colors and styles, picked out what you need seasonally, but that doesn't mean you add in everything. Building a capsule wardrobe is all about using the items you absolutely love and will use all season long. The last step is all about making sure you stick to that plan and also seeing what items you don't have but would like to see added to your wardrobe. This is a function that I like, but won't necessarily use because I try to limit my shopping consumption.

I really do like the Cladwell Capsule app because it makes tackling your closet so much easier than just deciding one day to clean out your closet. With its simple 4 step system, you can easily conquer it in a day or however long you like! If you've ever wanted to clean out your closet and start working with a capsule wardrobe, this is the way to do it.
