How to Organize Your Home
Hello, I'm finally back from a long hiatus! It's been a few weeks since I fully wrote for the blog but thankfully our house is almost complete and I cannot wait to start revealing rooms to everyone. It's been a hectic couple of weeks but every day I love throwing myself into work and watching out dream home become a reality.
If there's one thing I've been thinking about lately, and acting on, is simplifying and de-cluttering our lives. We don't have a lot of things, although living in a small apartment for a year made it seem that way, but I started to take stock in how many little knick nacks we have. They serve no purpose and honestly, I was filling more boxes with needless items than actual things we needed! Since this is the final move we are making for a long time, this was a good opportunity as any to really evaluate how we organize our home and remove items that were taking up space.
One of the things that stood out to me the most was my clothes. Yes, I'm a fashion blogger and I have a lot of clothes but realistically, after one shoot I no longer wear it anymore. So it just sits unnecessarily in my closet forever unworn. I started making a pile of clothing that will ultimately end up at Goodwill or at my local consignment store to be sold. I don't like the feeling of being wasteful with anything and would rather my unworn clothes go to someone that needs them for a job or will actually wear them.
For me, when I go through this exercise which is typically a few times a year, I break things down like this:
Have I used this since last year?
If I were shopping right now, would I buy this?
Am I holding on to this for sentimental value?
Do I have a similar item that serves the same purpose?
Do I have a realistic plan to use or wear this?
Does it fit me or my living space?
Am I holding on to a broken item to fix in the future? This question is also really good for those "I swear I'll DIY this in the future!" of which I'm incredibly guilty of!
Since applying these questions to the objects in our home, I'm starting to feel better about what's actually inside our home. Just because we expanded into a bigger place doesn't mean that we need to add more things to just fill in space. I like that two of my closets are essentially empty aside from a few storage boxes. I want them to stay empty. It's a crazy notion but it makes me feel better because when it comes down to it, possessions shouldn't rule our lives.
Plus, moving a lot of stuff is just the worst!!
I've given away a lot of clothes to friends over the past few weeks and have another pile that's ready to go either to a consignment or charity shop. At first I thought I'd miss those clothes but now, I can hardly remember what they look like. Even more of a reason to just let them go find better, happier homes that my closet.
What are ways that you keep your home organized? Do you do a massive purge once a year or do you slowly accumulate belongings? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
